In the News - September 30, 2002 Newsweek

September 30, 2002 Newsweek - letterSeptember 30, 2002 NEWSWEEK had this letter on the topic of parenting education, relating it to a review of a new psychology book Authentic Happiness

Dear Editor,

I was happy ...yes, my glass is half full... to see your article on Seligman's work and review of his book Authentic Happiness.

We could add another lesson to his list of three for love, work and raising children: Teach parents how to model and teach these behaviors to their kids. Until our society makes parenting education and family support a top priority, mental health workers and others, including criminal justice professionals, will play a too-often losing game of catch-up with the unhappy half-empty-glass group.

I like how Seligman said that our job as parents is to ease kids onto an 'escalator' of positive emotion and mastery, but we need to get on one ourselves. We need to be taught how to do this in mind, heart and body.
