May 2008 - USA TODAY Letter
'Offer parents support'

It is troubling that the gender and education debate mentions parents only in the context of their financial contributions to children's education ("Yes, university women, there is a boy problem," Our view; Girls gain, and so do boys," Opposing view, May 21).

USA TODAY's view cites wealthy parents' ability to find a college willing to accept their under-achieving sons. The opposing view makes a similar point, noting that disparities in family income are related to differences in academic success.

But parents do so much more than write checks. Deeper than our society's "boy problem" is a parenting problem.

One key piece of the solution to the educational, social and emotional challenges that families face today has to be parenting services.

Parenting education needs to become a default setting in human services: a stigma-free activity, accessible and affordable, that mothers and fathers take part in routinely.

Parenting education could be preventive or remedial, but either way, it is a necessity. The sooner parents and policymakers alike get this message, the better off all our children will be.

April 2008 - InTimeTV
Dr. Joe Troiani, host of Behavioral Health Update, a program for social workers, psychologists and other mental health professionals, interviews PARENTS FORUM founder Eve Sullivan in a show to be webcast on Saturday April 26 and available from their archives after that date. As a practicing clinical psychologist and professor of psychology, Dr. Troiani sees that professionals often neglect the role of peer support programs, or 'consumer- based organizations,' as he calls them. He believes that peer support has an important and distinct role to play in helping individuals, especially parents, successfully resolve the problems they face.

November 2007 - Epoch Times
The Boston and Atlanta issues of The Epoch Times (page A3, yes, we are moving up in the world!) carried a story about PARENTS FORUM. Founder Eve Sullivan, on a weekend visit to Atlanta, Georgia, to see her son and his wife, stopped by the public library near her son's work. A casual conversation with the library director led to the interview for this article which stresses the positive aspects of parenting education.

September 2007 - World Learning e-newsletter
In the World Learning e-newsletter, under the heading 'Alumni and their Impact' PARENTS FORUM founder Eve Sullivan recalls her summer in Switzerland as part of an Experimenter in International Living exchange group. It was her first experience living in another culture and trying to speak another language.

The Experiment, founded in the 1930s, has grown over the years to include study abroad and language instruction programs and a school for international training, taking the name World Learning to reflect its broad scope. In August, Boston area alums of several World Learning programs held a reunion and other similar get-together are planned.

June 2007 - Boston Sunday GLOBE
'The Aspiration Gap' appeared as the Boston Sunday GLOBE City Weekly Section June 4, 2007. A young man in Somerville, Mass., deeply troubled by his friends' self-destructive behaviors, had written an essay titled 'The graduation speech you'll never hear.'

This reader response by PARENTS FORUM founder Eve Sullivan addresses parents' dual roles in setting goals for and loving their children. It quotes research by Murray Straus (U. New Hampshire) and by Jelani Mandara (Northwestern U.) on parenting errors and omissions that cause suffering, particularly in young men. The article calls for 'greater recognition for the value and effectiveness of parenting education and support, along with wider availability and better funding for parenting services.'

May 2007 - NGO Network Magazine
'Parent Is A Verb' appears as the 'Guest Writer' column in the May-August issue of NGO Network Magazine, a general interest magazine for the non-profit sector in Nigeria and sub-Saharan Africa.

June 2006 - Drum Beat
The Drum Beat, an online publication of The Communications Initiative, published "Listening to Parents" by Eve Sullivan (PARENTS FORUM) and James Wagwau (New Vision Uganda).

From the article . . . "Parenting is fundamentally an emotional task, carried out by human beings who were also parented. We believe that viewing emotional awareness as the basis of parenting gives us a fundamentally new perspective. With this view, we see that it is essential to place primary emphasis on listening to parents."

A drumbeatchat discussion forum on listening to parents will follow. You are invited to express your opinion.

January 2003 - Family Support America Newsletter
What Do Parents Want? ...

YMCA of the USA and the Search Institute recently polled a thousand parents to examine what kinds of assistance and support they say they need to raise their children. A key finding: parents want more reassurance, especially from other parents, that they are making the right decisions for their children. Family support centers across the nation are doing great work to provide parents with on-going opportunities for parent peer group interactions that provide such reassurance.

For information on helping parents start a support group in your community, contact PARENTS FORUM [ info@parentsforum.org ] or purchase, through Family Support America, a low-cost copy of Starting and Operating Support Groups: A Guide for Parents [ http://www.familysupportamerica.org ]. On the Family Support America site be sure to look at the mapping project which lists centers in your area that are already providing peer support groups. (Hint: search under services for centers that provide peer support groups/mentoring..)

To read more on the study, called Building Strong Families, visit YMCA of the USA or the Search Institute.

Boston PARENTS PAPER

Cathy Elsik in the column Parenting People featured PARENTS FORUM under the headline Helping Parents Air Their Feelings and quoted founder Eve Sullivan, "As parents we teach children to process emotions... We tell them it's OK to feel angry, OK to feel sad and OK to feel afraid. And, in order to parents to do that, they must get comfortable on their own emotional roller coaster first."
